Question & Answer Q & A : Epistasis
نویسندگان
چکیده
Fine, so what does a population geneticist mean by epistasis? RA Fisher used ‘epistacy’ and later ‘epistasis’ to describe genetic interactions more generally [2]. We think that population geneticists hijacked this term over a decade after its coinage just to confuse the classical geneticists. OK, what does a medical doctor mean by epistasis? A thin film on the surface of a urine specimen. Enough said on that topic.

متن کاملA Comprehensive Biophysical Description of Pairwise Epistasis throughout an Entire Protein Domain
BACKGROUND Nonadditivity in fitness effects from two or more mutations, termed epistasis, can result in compensation of deleterious mutations or negation of beneficial mutations. Recent evidence shows the importance of epistasis in individual evolutionary pathways. However, an unresolved question in molecular evolution is how often and how significantly fitness effects change in alternative gen...
متن کاملKnowing the Answer
How should one understand knowledge-wh ascriptions? That is, how should one understand claims such as ‘‘I know where the car is parked,’’ which feature an interrogative complement? The received view is that knowledge-wh reduces to knowledge that p, where p happens to be the answer to the question Q denoted by the wh-clause. I will argue that knowledge-wh includes the question—to know-wh is to k...
متن کاملUniform Results for Serre’s Theorem for Elliptic Curves
Let E/K be an elliptic curve defined over a number field K and without complex multiplication (CM). For a rational prime , let K(E[ ]) be the th division field of E, which we know is a finite Galois extension of K. By a celebrated result of Serre [18], there exists a positive constant c(E,K), depending on E and K, such that Gal(K(E[ ])/K) GL2(Z/ Z) for all ≥ c(E,K). In [18, 19], Serre asked whe...
